BIOGRAPHY

 

Fabio Pietrantonio was born in Turin (Italy) on 27 November 1966.

He began his artistic experience by organising parties and themed events in ibiza (Spain), in Porto Cervo (Sardinia) and in Milan, planning and realising all the artwork for the decorations. In these places, starting in the early 1990s, he also began first participations in group exhibitions with other Italian artists. Also in Sardinia, he got to know the sculptor Gaspare da Brescia, whose assistant he became for about three years, participating in the realisation of works of religious subjects commissioned by the Vatican Museums, an experience that would mark Pietrantonio's first contact with sacred iconography and his autonomous and original approach to biblical symbols.

The travels and long stays in Australia proved to be very beneficial to his artistic development. He soon came into contact with groups of and schools in Sydney and Byron Bay, but it is the encounter with the indigenous peoples that strongly influenced his education.


Pietrantonio began his personal research by observing the symbolism and spirituality of the Australian Aborigines; drawing from a civilisation still tied to a primitive lifestyle and an intact culture and uncontaminated by progress and by industrialisation, he becomes fully aware of those that will be the constituent elements of his poetic vision centred on a rediscovered inner balance and a harmonious relationship with nature.

It was to be another journey that marked him profoundly time in New Mexico where he got to know and explore the Pueblos of the Native Americans, meeting the 'elders' and discovering the fascination of rituals through the symbolism of the sacred.

The artist perceives from these cultures an intimate message and understands the importance of overcoming states of alienation and anxieties that characterise contemporary western society by rediscovering an original and organic relationship with creation.

The 'cosmic' order of the Pietrantonio's work is expressed through the use of materials such as wood, stone, dust, sand and pigments balanced with metals, gauze, textiles, ropes and even petals of golds. Objects that he carefully selects them from pristine environments and then carefully recombined on canvas, in installations or in ritual performances in search of a harmony of forms colours and sensations.

Meeting him during his exhibitions and in preparation for them in his ateliers in Milan and Turin, people come into direct contact with the artist and share his creative flair of the moment. Fabio Pietrantonio, with his personality, is the exact opposite of the stereotype of the reserved artist and who pours conflicts, anxieties and existential tensions into his works.

After the series of terrorist attacks around the world, since 2004 Pietrantonio began painting and depicting totemic animal symbols of protection that convey messages of peace and faith.

Strongly impressed by the figure of Karol Wojtila, Pietrantonio began a parallel cycle of sacred art, interpreting various portraits of Giovanni Paolo II and dwelling in particular on the message of intense spirituality that emerged in the last stages of the pontificate marked by suffering and the fight against illness.

The mystical yearning that characterises Pietrantonio's research goes beyond individual religious beliefs and investigates, according to a pantheistic and shamanic vision, the profound sense of communion and reunion between man and nature.

Active with exhibitions, performances and installations all over the world, Fabio Pietrantonio has chosen to live in secluded and serene places in the unspoilt nature of the Alps, on the border between Italy and France, and in Sardinia, drawing from these places a continuous source of inspiration for his works.

In recent years he has collaborated with international galleries in London, Madrid and Tokyo, also participating in renowned fairs such as 'Art Basel Miami'.
